Our Trip Through Italy (Series Index)
In 2017, Leanne and I had the pleasure of touring parts of Italy over the course of 3 weeks. Utilizing only local transit and carrying only what could fit in our backpacks, we got a small taste of some of the major cities (and hidden gems) of the country of Italy.
Check out each of the individual blogs below for photos from that particular spot.
Part 1: Naples
Happy to be in the city that is known as the birthplace of pizza (and severely jetlagged from a serious day of travel and timezone hopping), here’s our exploration of just a tiny sliver of Naples.
Part 2: Guingano
A local train and 30-minute taxi ride from Naples, we finally arrived exhausted and relieved at our Airbnb in Giungano (Domus Laeta). We nearly wept as we stepped out onto the balcony and witnessed the view of the valley below. Here’s a few of our favourite moments in the Italian countryside.
Part 3: Atrani & Amalfi
Just before you make it to Amalfi, you’ll pass through a small town named Atrani. This fantastic spot (with all the character and fewer tourists than Amalfi) is the perfect way to experience Amalfi while retaining a little more of the charm of a city on a hill. Here’s how the town looks through our eyes.
Part 4: Positano
Nevermind all the endless stairs and the non-existent roads, there’s no denying that Positano is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Here’s what it looked like to be perched on the coast of the Mediterranean for a couple of days in 2017.
Part 5: Capri
Our private boat ride around the island was worth every euro and the experience was one of those once-in-a-lifetime events. Capri was the perfect halfway-point of our time in Italy, and made for a ton of incredible photos.
Part 6: Rome
From the Colosseum to the Trevi Fountain, local parks to local grocery stores, our time in Rome was a little quieter than the adventure some choose, but it was the perfect experience for all we wanted to see. Here are a few of the highlight moments.
Part 7: Florence
Florence was a city we hugely underestimated prior to arrival. This city — it’s vibe, the architecture, the pace, the city squares, everything — took us by surprise and the whole time we were there, we were thinking “I can’t wait to come back and explore this place properly.” What a perfect place to spend our 3rd wedding anniversary. Enjoy the photos.
Part 8: Venice
Is it like how it looks in the movies? Yes, it absolutely is. Maybe even better. We loved capping off our Italy trip in Venice, and have encouraged tons of couples over the years to make it a mandatory stop on any tour of Italy. It is indescribable: truly one of a kind. These are our last photos of Italy before returning home.
How could we really summarize our time in Italy?
It had been a dream of ours for a number of years by the time it happened, and we still look back and can't believe the fact that we were actually fortunate enough to do it.
Some places you travel you can pass through without much of a thought. You return to everyday life and forget that you'd once spent time in that town, city, or country.
Not Italy, though. The endless beauty everywhere entirely justifies its reputation as a country of wonder and phenomenal culture. The three weeks we spent as Italians will have a lasting impression on the rest of our lives.
